EVENT LOGISTICS and CHECK POINT INFORMATION for PARTICIPANTS AND SUPPORT CREWS Here you will find everything you need to know about the Start and Finish of WildEndurance and the four Checkpoints around the course. Please note - It is essential that you check-in when you arrive at each check-point AND when you check out. This helps us keep an accurate record of where you are on the course. If there is anything we haven't covered here that you need to know then please email us [link to sean.greenhill@wilderness.org.au] or give us a call on 02 9282 9553 THE START - Queen Victoria Hospital, Wentworth Falls WildEndurance starts at the old Queen Victoria hospital on Tableland Road in Wentworth Falls. The hospital is approximately 4.5 kilometres from the turn off from the Great Western Highway which runs east/west through the Blue Mountains (the junction is easy to spot as Longview Garden Centre is right on the corner - it is about 1.5km east of the centre of Wentworth Falls). WildEndurance will start at 8am on Saturday morning - you will need to be there by 7.45am at the very latest. Please don't be late as we will be CLOSING THE ROAD at 7.45am and you won't be able to get through if you are not at the start by that time! There is plenty of car parking space at the Queen Victoria hospital for you and your support crew. But remember, the road will not reopen until 9am so your crew will have to wait till then to get back to the main highway. Temporary toilet facilities will be available at the start. The closest shops, accommodation, water taps and petrol station are in Wentworth Falls itself (about 6km from the hospital)
CHECKPOINT ONE - Queen Victoria Hospital, Wentworth Falls The first section of the course is a large loop that will bring you back to the Queen Victoria hospital after 33km - and that is where the first Checkpoint will be. The Checkpoint will have temporary toilet facilities and some water available so you can refill your bottles or camel pack if you need to - but remember it is your support crew who should be providing you with fresh water and with all your food and other supplies. There is plenty of space around the old Hospital site for car parking and for your support crew to set up its own camp kitchen for hot food and warm drinks. The closest shops, accommodation, water taps and petrol station are in Wentworth Falls itself (about 6km from the hospital)
CHECKPOINT TWO - On Narrowneck, end of Glen Raphael Drive, Katoomba The second Checkpoint (and the relay handover point for those in a team of six who are competing in the relay option) will be at the end of Glen Raphael Drive in Katoomba. Glen Raphael Drive is a dirt road off Cliff Drive in Katoomba (the junction is about 1.2km from Scenic World). From the junction with Cliff Drive to the Checkpoint is about 2.8km - but for safety reasons the last 800m of the road (from the top of the Golden Stairs) will be closed to vehicle traffic for the WildEndurance event. This means that your support crew, and relay teams, will have to park and walk the last 800m to access the Checkpoint. Car parking is available at numerous spots along Glen Raphael drive - but it is a dirt road so extra care will be needed when driving in and out. The Checkpoint will have temporary toilet facilities and some water available so you can refill your bottles or camel pack if you need to - but remember it is your support crew who should be providing you with fresh water and with all your food and other supplies. Space at the Checkpoint is limited and it is not a suitable spot for camping - but Katoomba with all its accommodation options is only 6 km away and there is a private campground at Katoomba Falls Caravan Park on Katoomba Falls Road with full facilities (4.5km from the Checkpoint).
CHECKPOINT THREE - Dunphys campground, end of Megalong Valley road The third Checkpoint will be at Dunphy's campground at the end of the Megalong Valley Road. It is about 75 minutes drive from Katoomba The Megalong Valley road is accessed from Blackheath which is about 10kms beyond Katoomba on the Great Western Highway. At the traffic lights in the centre of Blackheath turn west across the railway tracks and then immediately left again. After 500m the road turns sharp right and you need to turn left at the junction after another 900m. After Megalong Road becomes dirt it is 8km to Dunphys- after passing through the second gate drive directly up the hill to the wide grassy area where the checkpoint is located. Dunphy's campground is a wide open space with plenty of car parking and comfy grass for camping on. There are also picnic benches and a compost toilet and small rainwater barrel. The campground is an excellent spot for your support crew to set up camp, kick back and wait for your arrival - remember it is your support crew who should be providing you with fresh water and with all your food and other supplies. As well as the campground accommodation is also available at a number of private cabins and bed and breakfast locations through the Megalong Valley The closest shops, accommodation and petrol station are in Blackheath itself (about 20km from the campground). Water taps are available at Megalong Sports Ground, signposted on Megalong Road about 9km north of Dunphys.
CHECKPOINT FOUR - Explorers tree, Nellies Glen Road Katoomba The fourth Checkpoint will be at the top of the Six Foot track where it meets Nellies Glen Road about 400m west of the tourist landmark The Explorers Tree which is on the south side of the Great Western Highway through the Blue Mountains 3km west of Katoomba. Car parking is available in a large bay opposite The Explorers Tree on Nellies Glen Road and in the small car parking area at the top of the Six Foot Track. The Checkpoint will have temporary toilet facilities and some water available so you can refill your bottles or camel pack if you need to - but remember it is your support crew who should be providing you with fresh water and with all your food and other supplies. Space at the Checkpoint is limited and it is not a suitable spot for camping - but Katoomba with all its accommodation options is only 3 km away and there is a private campground at Katoomba Falls Caravan Park on Katoomba Falls Road with full facilities (4km from the Checkpoint). The closest shops, accommodation, water taps and petrol station are in Katoomba itself (about 3.5km from the Checkpoint)
FINISH - York Fairmont Resort, Sublime Point Road Leura The finish line at the end of the WildEndurance course will be at the York Fairmont Resort on Sublime Point Road in Leura. The resort is approximately 3.5km from the Great Western Highway and is signposted from there. There will be toilet facilities and there is plenty of car parking space available. Camping is not possible at the finish but the Resort has great rooms available for those who want to book ahead and there are plenty of other accommodation options in the village of Leura. |
